New Township Name
The Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield officially changed its corporate name to the Township of Selwyn! This exciting change was as a result of Council's vision to select a more cohesive name that was shorter and easier to say. This change was also initiated due to Canada Posts decision to change some rural routes in Peterborough County to reflect civic addresses and the municipal name.
The Township has now gone through the process of rebranding; including the development of a new logo and new signage.
Corporate Strategic Plan
Through review of the 2007 Strategic Plan (Read a review of the accomplishments from the 2007-2012 Strategic Plan here: 2007 Strategic Plan Report Card) and a Workshop held with Township Council and Senior Staff, a variety of key issues, strengths, and opportunities pertaining to the Township of Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield emerged. Input was sought on the draft Strategic Plan Statements through a variety of engagement opportunities including: open houses, the website, consultation with staff and Committees, informal conversations with members of the community and a variety of Council attended public engagement events (Seniors events, Chamber events, etc.).
As part of the Strategic Planning Process, we also sought input on a new Corporate name and At-Large voting. Response to the Strategic Plan was excellent as evidenced by over 100 people attending the open houses, and over 300 corporate name suggestions. We also received feedback through our website.
Sustainability is a term used throughout this document and as such, it is important to define sustainable given its widespread use in today's culture.
"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability seeks to find a balance between environmental, socio-cultural and economic interests. The result: a healthy community."

In December of 2012, the Township commenced preliminary discussions regarding the possible expansion of the Lakefield electoral ward to include the Lakefield South Secondary Planning area. Since then, the Township has reviewed the possibility of pursuing this endeavour however, with upcoming changes to policing services in the Lakefield Ward and the unknown tax impact on existing properties that currently reside in the Smith Ward the Township has deferred this matter to the next term of Council (2014-2018). At that time, final policing arrangements will be in place and consultation will be more meaningful based on known impacts.
