The Township is seeking an Environmental Programs Intern, who will be instrumental in the implementation of three new Township-wide programs, including a clear garbage bag program, a green event policy, and a digester and re-leaf program.  These efforts are part of the Township’s Climate Change Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to waste, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. 

The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree in sustainable waste management, environmental policy, environmental science, sustainability, sustainable agriculture and food systems, public policy, community engagement, communications or a related field. Candidates with experience implementing and promoting green initiatives will be preferred. 

The individual will be expected to promote climate-friendly practices across municipal facilities and community organizations.  This internship is research and policy-driven with hands-on, people-oriented components.  The person must be flexible, adaptable and possess excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills. A proven ability to manage several projects simultaneously is a must.

The person requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills and must act professionally in providing service to the public and as a representative of the municipality. 

The term of this 6 month internship starts July 14th, 2020 through January 15, 2021.  The present compensation for this position is $18.70/hour, based on a 35 hour work week, Tuesday – Saturday.  Sundays and Mondays off.

This internship is supported by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Clean Tech Internship Stream.  All prospective candidates must meet the criteria for qualified interns below*.  Qualified candidates are invited to submit their application, consisting of a resume and cover letter, to the undersigned by 12 noon, Wednesday June 24th, 2020.

  • Post-secondary students and graduates
  • No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada
  • Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
  • Not receiving employment insurance during their internship
  • Available to work for at least 6 months
  • Not previous participants of a federal youth employment program
  • Not employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns)
