Youth "Can Do" Project
The Youth "Can Do" Project brought together eleven (11) youth of the Township of Selwyn and gave them the opportunity to help the Township design a skateboard park in Isabel Morris Park, located in Lakefield. This project would not have been possible without the support of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Sport through the 2013-2014 Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund (OSRCF).
Little did they know, the youth were also developing their leadership skills and receiving capacity building training while also learning about the need for physical activity. The project also laid the groundwork for future sport/recreation program initiatives. Through this youth engagement process, the community youth sport and recreation sector was strengthened. In turn assisting with the future growth and sustainability of a youth sport and recreation group, who can provide the municipality with valuable input into youth issues in the community.
The outcome of the Youth "Can Do" Project resulted in:
- Recommendations for a new community skateboard facility, including basic conceptual plans;
- A more engaged youth sector;
- Opportunities to learn new leadership and capacity building techniques / skills;
- Supporting the development of a youth sport and recreation committee.
The Township now has a "viable" design, which it will be able to bring forward for the eventual construction of an outdoor skateboard facility (as recommended in the Township's 2012 Recreation Services Master Plan). This will provide area youth with an additional opportunity to participate in physical activity.
