Bus Service "The Link"

Contacts

The Link logoWe thank everyone who provided feedback on the new rural bus service called “The Link”.

We wish to inform the public that there are a number of concerns related to COVID-19 about starting the service at this time.

When the grant for The Link was first approved in the spring of 2018, the original timeline for the grant program was 5 years. Due to a change in government in 2018, the new Provincial government placed a ‘pause’ on grant programs in order to conduct a fiscal review of the Province’s finances. It wasn’t until July 2019 that we received the formal agreement and could move forward. Prior to COVID-19, we had been working hard to get The Link on the road.

Several factors related to COVID-19 may compromise a successful start to the service. Namely, generating ridership presents as a significant challenge. For example, Trent and Fleming classes will be online for the Fall semester, which means far less students will need access to campus using The Link. Peterborough Transit has also implemented capacity limitations for public transit at this time for social distancing reasons, further reducing ridership potential.

Because of the aforementioned reasons The Township of Selwyn, along with project partners Curve Lake First Nation, Community Care Peterborough, the City of Peterborough and Trent University are requesting the Province provide a formal extension of the grant from March 31, 2023 to March, 2025. If granted, we propose to start the service early 2021 or spring 2021. Attracting ridership for a new service is incredibly important to the overall success of this pilot.  We need to demonstrate that we can offer an affordable, reliable and safe service. COVID-19 is undermining the ability of this service to start from a successful position. In the long run, we believe delaying The Link will be beneficial, but we understand this may inconvenience some prospective riders at this time.

We will continue to keep the public posted on how the Province responds to this request.
