Municipal Response to COVID-19:

Garbage Collection

Garbage collection continues as scheduled. However, we ask that you please bag ALL garbage and DO NOT place waste loosely in garbage containers. Loose materials will NOT be collected. This small change helps protect collectors from the risk COVID-19. 

Curbside Leaf and Yard Waste Collection

In order to keep our Landfill open for essential purposes, we are asking for everyone to ensure that physical distancing is maintained (2 metres/6 feet apart) to keep the public and staff safe.

  • Brush is now being accepted.
  • Debit ONLY - No cash transactions.
  • Be patient – you may need to wait in order to maintain physical distancing measures.
  • Summer hours now in effect:
    •  Monday – Closed
    • Tuesday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Wednesday – 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
    • Thursday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Friday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Saturday – 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Hazardous waste depot at the Smith Landfill will not open this summer – Pido Road is still open
  • No hard plastic collection and no environmental days will be available this summer.

  • All municipal recreational facilities (Lakefield-Smith Community Centre, Ennismore Community Centre, Bridgenorth Community Hall and Marshland Centre) are CLOSED until further notice.

  • All Selwyn Public Library branches (Bridgenorth, Ennismore and Lakefield) are CLOSED for ‘in-Library’ services.
  • Curbside service will commence on June 1st – visit the Library website for details.

  • The Selwyn Township Planning Department is accepting Minor Variance applications and Site Plan applications.
    • The first Committee of Adjustment meeting will be June 9, 2020.
  • Selwyn Township is NOT accepting new Zoning By-law Amendments applications at this time.

  • The Selwyn Township Building Department is accepting Building Permit applications electronically and conducting inspections on unoccupied buildings.

  • The Township office is helping customers through other methods as the Office is currently CLOSED to the public. We are operating with a reduced number of staff members.   
  • Emails can be sent to info@selwyntownship.ca or a voicemail can be left at 705-292-9507. Emails and voicemails will be checked as soon as possible and will be returned in a priority sequence.

  • Council has authorized a number of financial supports for individuals and businesses in response to the COVID-19 crisis:
    • Post-dated cheques for tax payments for the May 4th property tax instalment were held and not cashed until May 29, 2020.
    • Post-dated cheques received before March 27, 2020 for property tax payments were held for a period of 60 days from the date of the cheque before being cashed.
    • Automated withdrawals through the Pre-Authorized Payment (PAP) Plan between March 27 and May 31, 2020 have been suspended, unless contacted by the property owner.
    • Extension of Property Tax Interest Relief: The Township will not be charging interest and penalty on property tax arrears for April 1, 2020, May 1, 2020, June 1, 2020, July 1, 2020, and August 1, 2020. In addition, no penalties will be charged for non-payment of the May 4th and August 10th tax instalments. All legislated charges for penalties and interest will commence on September 1, 2020.

  • Dog Licence fee will remain $15.00 until  August 31, 2020.
  • Payments can be dropped off in Municipal Office dropbox at 1310 Centre Line or mailed to Selwyn Township, P.O. Box 270, Bridgenorth, Ontario K0L 1H0

Beaches - email - recreation@selwyntownship.ca

  • Beaches are OPEN, however individuals must maintain a safe physical distance of at least two metres apart from others and no gatherings of more than 5 people are permitted. Amenities located at the beach, such as playgrounds remain CLOSED

  • Green spaces in parks and trails remain open for walkthrough access ONLY. Individuals must maintain the safe physical distance of at least two metres apart from others. 

Outdoor Recreational Amenities - email - recreation@selwyntownship.ca

  • Playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment are CLOSED.
  • Skateboard park, sport fields, basketball and tennis courts/pickle ball, frisbee park, picnic areas, park shelters, bleachers, and benches may be used subject to physical distancing of 2 metres (6 feet) being maintained, no team/league sports, and gatherings of no more than 5 people. Stay home if you have COVID-19 symptoms!

Trailer Parks

  • Seasonal Campgrounds are permitted to be open for ONLY seasonal campers who have a full season contract and have electricity, water and sewage disposal services. Seasonal trailer owners should check with their Trailer Park to see if it is OPEN (Campgrounds do not have to open).   
  • No transient camping is permitted. No communal amenities are permitted to be open (e.g. washrooms, showers, recreational halls etc.).
  • In addition, all other Provincial Orders (e.g. no gatherings of more than 5 people) must be adhered to and other public health guidance must be followed (e.g. physical distancing, staying home if you have any symptoms of COVID-19, hand hygiene, etc.).

Township Boat Access Areas

  • Public boat access areas in Selwyn Township are OPEN.
  • Physical distancing must be followed. Please wait your turn in your vehicle; and if you have any COVID-19 related symptoms, return home, self-isolate and contact Peterborough Public Health.
  • The Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with our Townships are requesting boaters follow these recommendations and tips:
    • Contact marinas or storage facilities where your vessel is located in advance to ensure it is accessible and ready for use. Be patient as these businesses will need time to prepare your vessel.
    • Make sure your vessel has all the required safety equipment before launching. Any operator who is unsure of the equipment required for their vessel please view the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide.
    • Do not consume any alcohol or drugs if you plan on operating a vessel. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements!

  • Trent-Severn Waterway - Starting June 1, 2020, the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site will offer limited visitor access and basic services along the entire system, with the exception of Swift Rapids lock station. Open this link to read the details.

Enforcement

  • Local Police Services will be enforcing the Provincial Order. The public can report issues to the following non-emergency numbers.
    • Smith and Ennismore Wards – Peterborough County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) non-emergency number: 705-742-0401 or 1-888-310-1122.
    • Lakefield Ward - Peterborough Police Service non-emergency number: 705-876-1122.
    • Important - 911 is for emergencies only; reports of non-compliance related to the above are to be reported to the non-emergency numbers provided above.

Open Air Burning

  • Small campfires are permitted except in built-up areas (e.g. Lakefield, Bridgenorth, Woodland Acres, Hamlets of Ennismore and Young’s Point and generally in subdivisions).
  • Brush Burning (except in built-up areas) is currently permitted provided that residents call the Fire Department at 705-292-7282 first. Residents must call during regular business hours (Mon – Fri) in advance of burning to obtain permission. Residents must provide their name, address, phone number & date you wish to burn.   Open Air burning is governed by By-law 2010-054 and those burning must comply with the provisions of the By-law.
  • Important - Open Air Burning can change at any time as conditions change.  Residents must verify the current conditions – call the Fire Department or check our website. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to stay current.
