Municipal Response to COVID-19:

Garbage Collection

Garbage collection continues as scheduled. However, we ask that you please bag ALL garbage and DO NOT place waste loosely in garbage containers. Loose materials will NOT be collected. This small change helps protect collectors from the risk COVID-19. 

Everyone to ensure that physical distancing is maintained (2 metres/6 feet apart) to keep the public and staff safe.

  • Brush is accepted.
  • Debit ONLY - No cash transactions.
  • Be patient – you may need to wait in order to maintain physical distancing measures.
  • Summer hours now in effect:
    •  Monday – Closed
    • Tuesday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Wednesday – 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
    • Thursday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Friday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
    • Saturday – 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
    • Sunday - Closed

Hazardous Waste Depot at the Smith Landfill - Summer 2020 Hours

Open June 25 to September 3

  • Thursday: 9am - 5pm 

Safety Requirements:

  1. If you feel sick, stay home.
  2. Residents are required empty their vehicles and place the material on the tables. 
  3. Be patient, stay in your car and follow direction from onsite staff.
  4. Limit of 1 emptiable (motor oil or gas) container per visit. 

NOTE: Pido Road Hazardous Waste Depot is also open

  • No hard plastic collection and no environmental days will be available this summer.  

Municipal Recreation Facilities - email

  • All municipal recreational facilities (Lakefield-Smith Community Centre, Ennismore Community Centre, Bridgenorth Community Hall and Marshland Centre) are CLOSED until further notice.

Selwyn Public Libraries - email -

  • Curbside service and on-line services are available – visit the Library website for details. 
  • All Selwyn Public Library branches (Bridgenorth, Ennismore and Lakefield) are CLOSED for ‘in-Library’ services.

Planning - email -

  • The Selwyn Township Planning Department is accepting Minor Variance applications and Site Plan applications.
  • The Planning Department is reviewing Zoning By-law Amendment applications. We will work with applicants and process them dependent on the nature of the application.

Building - email -

  • The Selwyn Township Building Department is accepting Building Permit applications electronically and conducting inspections on unoccupied buildings.

Selwyn Municipal Office - email-

  • The Township office is helping customers through other methods as the Office is currently CLOSED to the public. We are operating with a reduced number of staff members.   
  • Emails can be sent to or a voicemail can be left at 705-292-9507. Emails and voicemails will be checked as soon as possible and will be returned in a priority sequence. 

Finance Department - email -

  • Extension of Property Tax Interest Relief: The Township will not be charging interest and penalty on property tax arrears for April 1, 2020, May 1, 2020, June 1, 2020, July 1, 2020, and August 1, 2020. In addition, no penalties will be charged for non-payment of the May 4th and August 10th tax instalments. All legislated charges for penalties and interest will commence on September 1, 2020.

Dog Licencing - email -

  • Dog Licence fee will remain $15.00 until  August 31, 2020.
  • Payments can be dropped off in Municipal Office dropbox at 1310 Centre Line or mailed to Selwyn Township, P.O. Box 270, Bridgenorth, Ontario K0L 1H0

Beaches - email -

  • Beaches are OPEN, however individuals must maintain a safe physical distance of at least two metres apart from others and no gatherings of more than 10 people are permitted. Amenities located at the beach, such as playgrounds remain CLOSED
  • Peterborough Public Health maintains a routine surveillance program for public beaches during summer months to ensure that the water quality is safe for swimming. Public Health surveillance program begins in June and continues until the end of August each year.

  • Public beaches in Selwyn Township are sampled at least once every week. The water samples are tested for E. coli bacteria. It takes approximately 24 hours for the health unit to receive and analyze the water quality results from the lab.For beach testing results, please visit:

Parks and Trails - email -

  • Green spaces in parks and trails remain openIndividuals must maintain the safe physical distance of at least two metres apart from others. 

Outdoor Recreational Amenities - email -

Playgrounds/Play Structures, Tennis Courts, Basketball Courts, Picnic Shelters, Bleachers, Sport Fields and Skate Park

  • By Provincial Order, the following communal or shared, public or private, outdoor recreational amenities including, but not limited to; playgrounds and outdoor exercise equipment are CLOSED.

  • Skateboard park, sport fields, basketball and tennis courts/pickle ball, frisbee park, picnic areas, park shelters, bleachers, and benches may be used subject to physical distancing of 2 m (6 feet) being maintained, no team/league sports, no more than 10 people, and stay home if you have COVID-19 symptoms.

  • Local Police Services will be enforcing Provincial directives, including misuse of playgrounds, tennis courts etc... The public can report issues to the following non-emergency #’s.

    • Smith and Ennismore Wards – Peterborough County OPP non-emergency contact 705-742-0401 or 1-888-310-1122.
    • Lakefield Ward - Peterborough Police Service non-emergency line at 705-876-1122.
    • Important - 9-1-1 is for emergencies only; reports of non-compliance related to the above are to be reported to the non-emergency #’s not 9-1-1.

We care for our parks, natural areas and streetscapes to enhance the Township's image and provide recreational spaces for residents and visitors.

Trailer Parks

  • Seasonal Campgrounds are permitted to be open. Seasonal trailer owners should check with their Trailer Park to see if it is OPEN and what amenities are open.

Community Gardens

Township Boat Access Areas

  • Public boat access areas in Selwyn Township are OPEN.
  • Physical distancing must be followed. Please wait your turn in your vehicle; and if you have any COVID-19 related symptoms, return home, self-isolate and contact Peterborough Public Health.
  • The Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with our Townships are requesting boaters follow these recommendations and tips:
    • Make sure your vessel has all the required safety equipment before launching. Any operator who is unsure of the equipment required for their vessel please view the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide.
    • Do not consume any alcohol or drugs if you plan on operating a vessel. Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements!
  • Trent-Severn Waterway - Starting June 1, 2020, the Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site will offer limited visitor access and basic services along the entire system, with the exception of Swift Rapids lock station. Open this link to read the details.

Fire - email -

Open Air Burning - BURN BAN INDEX:  Extremely High

  • Due to current dry conditions & high heat temperatures,  Fireworks are NOT permitted & NO Burning of Brush at this time. 

  • Small campfires are allowed between 7 pm and 1 am. Make sure water is close by to extinguish. DO NOT leave your fire unattended!

  • A reminder that NO burning allowed in built up areas (the Village of Lakefield, the Hamlet of Bridgenorth, Woodland Acres, the Hamlet of Ennismore & the Hamlet of Young’s Point).

  • Important - Open Air Burning can change at any time as conditions change.  Residents must verify the current conditions – call the Fire Department or check our website. Follow us on Facebook or Twitter to stay current.
