Community Impact

"Our skatepark will draw skateboarders from not only here in Selwyn Township, but from Peterborough, Lindsay and Oshawa. This will be excellent for the local economy to benefit from. Our design has features that set it apart from other parks in the area. It has great flow and is located in a beautiful spot." - Dan Jakins, Age 18

"I've enjoyed being a part of this project for many years. I've learned a lot about project planning, municipal government, grant writing, fundraising and public speaking. I think it's been a valuable project for local youth to have taken part in and I can't wait for the community to benefit when the park is completed this fall. Skateboarding can lead to valuable experiences and has taught me things you would not expect from a sport many consider a hobby." - Shawn Jakins, Age 16

Importance of Youth Empowerment

Youth feel a sense of belonging and value in their community when they are given a voice.

Project Team members learned essential skills applicable to future project development career opportunities.

Throughout the planning process, the youth involved stressed the importance of these values:

  • Inclusivity
  • Safety
  • Opportunity

The park will be a community space where family and friends can participate and observe.
