Silver Birch Reading Club

Contacts

The Silver Birch Reading Club for grades 3 to 6 is offered at all three branches of the Selwyn Library.  The Ontario Silver Birch Award reading program was established in 1994 to encourage Ontario children to read more, to learn more about Canadian writers and to develop powers of evaluation.  Silver Birch is a Forest of Reading program (the Forest of Reading is Canada's largest recreational reading program) where young readers have the unique opportunity to vote on the best nominated book by Canadian authors for their age group.

Who can attend Silver Birch Club?

This program is designed for readers aged 8 to 12, (grades 3 to 6,) with the Express list typically suited to readers in grade 3 and 4.  The Silver Birch® Award is comprised of three separate lists: Fiction, Non-fiction and Express. Our Express list is made up of both Fiction and Non-Fiction titles, and is geared to the more reluctant reader. This is not a drop-in program.  Club members must register as space is limited.

When and where does the Club take place?

Silver Birch program runs from February to April after school at all of our locations. There are 6 meetings of each club and these generally occur every two weeks during this time period.   We meet Tuesdays in Lakefield, Wednesdays in Bridgenorth and Thursdays in Ennismore.

What do children do at the Silver Birch Club?

Children meet with library staff and volunteers to talk about the nominated books, listen to speakers from our community, participate in activities based on this year's books and sign out books to read at home.  Children require a library card (free) to be a Silver Birch Club member and check out the books for the program.  At the end of the program the children vote for their favourite author if they have read 5/10 titles in their chosen category and we have a pizza party.
