Community Care in Lakefield has expanded its fitness classes to bring fitness and falls prevention to seniors in our community. Two free classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 40 Rabbit Street in Lakefield. Falls Prevention: a 1 hour class beginning at 2 pm to test & improve balance to prevent falls at home & in the community. Strengthening: a 1 hour class starting at 3 pm designed to improve movement, strength & balance. Those interested in attending are welcome to register at Community Care, call 705-652-8655, visit the office and/or show up on class day.

Falls account for more than half of all injuries among Canadians 65 years and over. One third of community-dwelling Canadian seniors experience one fall each year and half of those will fall more than once. Those who fall may limit their activities for fear of falling again. Unfortunately limited activity leads to the loss of strength, flexibility and balance and so increases the chance of falling again. The likelihood of dying from a fall-related injury increases with age: among seniors, 20% of deaths related to injury can be traced back to a fall. Consider attending these classes to prevent falls and improve independence.
