Culverts

A Culvert is a tunnel located at the end of driveways (road allowances) and across some roads to carry water from one area to another keeping it off roads and off properties.

The following are a few things a property owner can do to ensure the culvert is draining properly. Clear leaves and debris from the entrance to the culvert to ensure proper flow and drainage and don't add any decorative stones, plants, or shrubs around the area to prevent the same.

Half Loads

Half loads are applicable on all Township of Selwyn roads from March 1st to May 1st of every year. Time lines may be adjusted according to the road conditions.

Snow Plow Road Safety Tips

Be patient and keep a safe distance behind working snow plows. Snow plows often travel slowly because they are removing snow and spreading a sand slat mix.

Never pass a snow plow. Snow plows are wider that the average vehicle with large blades that may extend a meter or more ahead and into the neighbouring lane. Passing a snow plow could result in a collision.

Don't drive beside snow plows. You risk collision as snow plows sometimes shift sideways when they are plowing packed snow or drifts.

Move aside. Snow plows often drive along the centreline of a roadway to remove snow. If you are approaching a snow plow from the opposite direction, shift right if conditions allow ensuring there is enough space for them to pass you safely.

Beware of reduced visibility. Even at reduced plowing speeds, a light powdery snow forms a cloud in the wake of a snow plow that severely restricts a driver's visibility making passing extremely dangerous.

Watch for snow plows on sunny days. Snow plows and removal equipment must be out for several hours after a storm clearing shoulders and cutting back snow banks. Please look out for plows even on clear days.

Street Lights and /or Public Area Lights

If you notice that a Street Light or Public Area Light is out, please contact the Public Works Administrative Office - 705-292-9507 ext. 236. Thank you for helping to keep our streets and public areas safe!

Road Sweeping

In early spring, the road sweeping crew works very diligently as soon as the frost is out of the ground to free our roads of excess sand from the winter activities.

Each year we sweep over 300 km of township roads.

We rotate yearly on what area is swept first. In the spring of 2015, we will being in Ennismore, Smith South, Smith North, and then Lakefield after we have swept the paved roads in the Township.

The amount of snow and frost we receive will determine the starting date.

Winter Street Parking

To assist in snow-clearing operations, winter parking restrictions are in effect during the winter months in the Township of Selwyn.  Public Works reminds everyone to please refrain from parking on Township streets overnight to allow for safer and effective snow clearing.
