Earth Day 2024

Participate in an Earth Day Clean Up!

Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 to create awareness about the environment and how we can take action to protect the earth.

From April 22 to April 27, community groups and individuals are encouraged to participate in an Earth Day Clean Up to pick up litter from roadsides and public places in Selwyn Township.

How to Participate

Participants will be provided with clear bags for garbage and recycling, nitrile gloves, and a landfill pass to dispose of the collected litter. These supplies are available for pick up at the Township Office (1310 Centre Line). We would like to thank Swish Maintenance for their generous donation of garbage bags and gloves to support this initiative.

Disposal of Litter

Participants can bring garbage and recycling to the Smith Landfill (1480 County Road 18) for disposal on Saturday, April 27 or from Tuesday, April 30 to Friday, May 5. Garbage and recycling must be separated before bringing it to the landfill.

Visit the Township’s Waste Collection page to learn about what can and cannot be recycled.

Safety Tips

Safety first! Review the following tips and take the necessary precautions before starting your clean up.

  • Use personal protective equipment, including gloves or a litter grabber
  • Wear a safety vest or bright clothing if collecting litter along a roadway
  • Cleanups should take place during daylight hours
  • Do not pick up dangerous materials such as glass, syringes/needles, chemicals, or medical waste
