Rehabilitation of Lakefield's Water System

Over $3 million in Funding towards the Rehabilitation of Lakefield’s Water System

Selwyn - The Township of Selwyn has received over $3 million combined from both the federal and provincial governments through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s (ICIP) Green Infrastructure Stream fund to support upgrades at the Lakefield Water Treatment Plant, the recommissioning of the Lakefield Standpipe and the replacement of water mains under Strickland Street and Prospect Street in the Village of Lakefield to meet current health and safety standards, as well as preventative maintenance.

The Green Infrastructure stream will support green infrastructure projects with outcomes across three crucial areas: Climate Change Mitigation, Adaptation, Resilience, and Disaster Mitigation, and Environmental Quality. Under this funding program, the Government of Canada invests up to 40 percent of total eligible costs, and the Ontario government invests up to 33.33 percent of the eligible costs for municipal projects across the province.

“Investments in clean, reliable drinking water are crucial to building strong communities and maintaining a healthy environment for Canadians. Our investment in Selwyn to support upgrades to watermains and the rehabilitation of the Lakefield Standpipe will improve water infrastructure across the community and will ensure residents have access to reliable and clean drinking water for years to come,” said Jennifer O’Connell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.

“This is an important capital investment in Lakefield that accomplishes several objectives; it saves local ratepayers money, equips the village with stronger, more climate-resilient infrastructure, and promotes long-term economic development,” MPP Dave Smith said. “I am proud to support this investment through the provincial government and the opportunities it provides,” MPP Smith added.  

“With the increasing growth and development within the Village of Lakefield, this funding will allow the Township, in partnership with Peterborough Utilities Group, to make significant infrastructure improvements to ensure those with municipal services will continue to have access to safe, reliable drinking water,” said Sherry Senis, Mayor of Selwyn Township.

The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is delivered through bilateral agreements between Infrastructure Canada and each of the provinces and territories, delivering over  

$33 billion in funding under the program. The program provides long-term, stable funding delivered by Infrastructure Canada to help communities reduce air and water pollution, provide clean water, increase resilience to climate change and create a clean-growth economy; build strong, dynamic, and inclusive communities; and ensure Canadian families have access to modern, reliable services that improve their quality of life.
