20% Water Conservation urged as Low Water Condition Upgraded to Level 2

In the event of a Low Water Situation:

Officials in Peterborough County and City will meet regularly to assess the situation.

Water conservation is encouraged and lawn watering and other non-essential water restrictions are implemented.

Open air burning is prohibited in most locations in the County, including Selwyn.

These measures are intended to preserve the water table as much as possible.

Individual residents may need contact a water hauler in the event that their well runs dry.

The Township has an Emergency Plan which sets out the manner in which we would respond to a large scale emergency.  We use this standard process to guide us through our emergency response.

ORCA  - Water Conservation in and around the Home - fact sheet

Some helpful & easy tips to conserve water!

  1. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth - this can save 6 litres of water per minute!
  2. Take a shorter shower. Shower can use anything between 6 and 45 litres per minute!
  3. Always use full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher - this cuts out unnecessary washes in between.
  4. Fix a dripping tap. A dripping tap can waste 15 litres of water a day, or 5,500 litres of water a year!
  5. Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe. A hosepipe uses 1,000 litres of water an hour.
  6. Fill a jug with tap water and place this in your fridge. This will mean you do not have to leave the cold tap running for the water to run cold before you fill your glass.
