Building Permits and Inspections

Update (May 19) - essential workplace limits have been lifted on construction

This change in the scope of permitted construction projects and recent amendments to the Building Code Act and regulations has prompted a modification to the Township’s inspections and permitting procedure.

The health and safety of our residents, customers and staff remains a key priority in addition to our goal of doing what we can to support the economy. Inspection services will continue subject  to the following conditions:

  • Inspection request timelines continue to apply (2 working days notice).
  • Requests for inspections must be made via email to building@selwyntownship.ca. Please include the following information in your email:

  • Inspections will only be conducted on unoccupied buildings. The structure is to be vacant while the inspection takes place i.e. an inspection will not be conducted while the building is occupied.
  • Inspections of occupied buildings such as renovated spaces, finished basements etc. are being managed on a case-by-case basis.   Please advise us if this is the case when booking your inspection, and we will contact you to discuss your specific circumstance and to make the appropriate arrangements.  Consideration will be given to ensuring all public health guidelines are followed and alternative means of completing the inspection (e.g. photographs) or possibly delaying the inspection, if there are no life safety issues, will be considered.
  • All documentation which is required to conduct the inspection (.ie. sealed truss drawings for framing, amended plans if changes have been made etc.) must be provided electronically so that copies can be made and taken with the inspector. Inspectors will not review paperwork left on site.

Applications for permits can only be accepted electronically. Please forward pdf. files to building@selwyntownship.ca together with all other relevant documentation.

It is important to note that building inspection staff have a modified work schedule for the duration of the office closure. Their schedules will be as follows until further notice:

  • The Selwyn Township Planning Department is accepting Minor Variance applications and Site Plan applications.
  • The Planning Department is reviewing Zoning By-law Amendment applications. We will work with applicants and process them dependent on the nature of the application.
