What is a Makerspace?

The idea behind makerspaces is simple: they are places where people can come together to learn about technology, crafts and other kinds of making, to share knowledge and skills with others, and to apply this knowledge and skill by creating things. You can explore using high-tech to no-tech tools.

SPL Makerspace Guidelines

  • The SPL Makerspace is available to all ages and all skill levels. All users must present a makerspace card in good standing.
  • Demonstration of competency will be required for use of some equipment.
  • Scheduled appointments are strongly suggested. This includes: tours of the space, open makerspace work time, and membership registration.
  • All classes, workshops, and programs are pre registration required.
  • Tools used in the space must be returned by the maker to their original location in a clean state.
  • The workspace also needs to be cleaned before the maker leaves.
  • SPL Makerspace does not accept responsibility if a project is destroyed, does not print correctly, or does not work.
  • SPL Makerspace  reserves the right to halt, delete, or disallow the creation of items that violates library policy, including the creation of weapons, or illegal items.
  • Only library computers may be connected to library machines, like the 3D printers, vinyl cutter, Glowforge etc.
  • Covered drinks are welcome in the makerspace. Food is not permitted.
  • SPL Makerspace is not responsible for equipment or files left behind.
  • Use of the makerspace is subject to the rules in the User Agreement, the Selwyn Public Library Customer Code of Conduct Policy 4.1.5, Acceptable Use of Equipment, Software, and Networks Policy 6.1.2, as well as any other applicable Library policies and procedures.

  • Users 17 years of age and under must have a parent or legal guardian sign the user agreement form and registration form on their behalf.
  • Users 13 years of age and older can use the makerspace and work unsupervised.
  • Users ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
