Selwyn Fire Department Marks Fire Prevention Week 2025
The Selwyn Fire Department is joining fire services across North America to recognize Fire Prevention Week™, running October 5-11, 2025. This year’s campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the importance of using lithium-ion batteries safely.
From cell phones and laptops to power tools, e-bikes, and scooters, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. While these batteries provide reliable power, they can also pose fire risks when not used, charged, or disposed of properly.
The campaign encourages everyone to remember three simple but critical steps:
- Buy Safely – Choose batteries and devices from reputable manufacturers and retailers.
- Charge Safely – Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and only use approved charging equipment.
- Recycle Safely – Recycle old or damaged batteries at proper facilities—never place them in household garbage or recycling bins.
To make recycling easy and safe for residents, household batteries can be dropped off year-round at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office, all three Selwyn Public Library branches, and the Smith Landfill Site.
“Lithium-ion batteries are part of our everyday lives, but when handled improperly, they can be dangerous,” said Andrew Bowyer, Fire Prevention Officer, Selwyn Fire Department. “By learning how to buy, charge, and recycle safely, we can help prevent fires and keep our community safe.”
The Selwyn Fire Department encourages all residents to take a few minutes during Fire Prevention Week to learn more about lithium-ion battery safety and share the message with family and friends.
