Candidate Nomination

Once the nomination paper has been filed, a candidate shall open a bank account in the name of the campaign, start accepting contributions and start incurring expenses.

Upon the successful filing of your nomination papers, you will be provided with:

• Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Candidates' Guide
• Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing 3rd Party Advertiser Guide

Some other suggestions:

• Become involved in the community
• Research and understand the role of a Mayor, Councillor or School Trustee
• Understand the:
  • Financial responsibilities
  • Financial reporting requirements
  • Campaign roles
  • Potential penalties
• Review the relevant legislation such as the:
  • Municipal Elections Act
  • Municipal Act
  • Municipal Conflict of Interest Act
  • Education Act (for School trustees)

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) has an online course, which is geared to individuals who are planning to run for a seat on municipal council.

• You cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign until you file your nomination paper.
• The earliest you can file your nomination paper is May 2, 2022.

Candidates have the responsibility to run an accessible campaign. Helpful tips for managing an accessible campaign are available in the AMCTO's Candidates' Guide to Accessible Elections

The Township has developed an Elections Accessibility Plan to ensure that electoral services are accessible to everyone – candidates, electors and staff. The Plan identifies ways the Township will eliminate barriers for persons of all abilities and create a positive electoral experience for everyone.

All candidates must file a financial statement. For details, please review the Municipal Elections Act or the MMAH Guide.

Troubleshooting

If you are having difficulty opening any of the forms, please try the following:

Tip #1

1. Hover over the link of the form you are trying to open
2. Right mouse click 
3. Select "Save link as..."
4. Select the location on your computer you wish to save the form (For example: Desktop)
5. Click save
6. Retrieve the form from the saved location and double click to open  

Tip #2

1. Ensure you have Adobe Reader 8 or higher. To install Adobe Reader, visit the Adobe website

Tip #3

1. Try opening the form in another web browser. Browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome offer a built-in PDF viewer that does not support some PDF forms.
