Landfill Site Passes

Each year, two Landfill Site passes are provided to ratepayers in the tax billing package. Keep them safe as a replacement pass will cost $10.00.

If you receive your tax bill via email, your landfill pass is waiting for you at the Smith Landfill (1480 County Road 18) upon your next visit.

A replacement pass can be purchased only from the Township office at 1310 Centre Line, Smith Ward.

Remember that passes need to be presented each time you make a trip to the Landfill, and only Selwyn Township residents have use of the Landfill site.

There is a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) bin located at the Smith Landfill Site.

Acceptable materials include:

Household Hazardous Waste

Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (also called MHSW) does not belong in the garbage or blue box recycling, as it contains toxins that are harmful to human and environmental health.

Household Hazardous Waste Depot (HHWD) at the Smith Landfill Site is now CLOSED for the season and will reopen end of May 2024.

Hazardous waste can also be taken to the Pido Road Hazardous Waste Depot - 400 Pido Road, Peterborough. Visit the Peterborough County website to find out more about this program.

Mattresses & Box Springs

Mattresses and Box Springs are now banned from the Smith Landfill Site. Please take them to the Bensfort Road Landfill Site in Peterborough, located at 1260 Bensfort Road. There is a disposal fee per unit for recycling.

Please do not take mattresses to the Pido Road HHW Depot.

Passenger Vehicle Tires
  • Tires with or without rims accepted
  • Agricultural tires (ie. tractor tires) are not accepted - these must be taken to the Bensfort Road Landfill Site

Up to 10 passenger vehicle tires can be dropped off at the Smith Landfill free-of-charge, however, you do still need to go across the scales to provide the landfill attendant with contact information.

Aquatic Weeds Disposal & Information
Disposing
  • Residents of Selwyn Township can take aquatic weeds/wild rice to the Landfill located at 1480 8th Line (County Road 18), Selwyn.
  • Please keep aquatic weeds/wild rice separate from other leaf and yard waste.
  • There is no charge to bring this material to the Landfill.
Weed Harvesting
  • Weed harvesting can take place from July until the end of August. Parks Canada - Trent-Sever Waterway (TSW) issues permits annually to mechanical weed harvesters. These harvesters are large machines which cut the weeds, and permit mandates that the harvester is required to remove the cut weeds from the water.
  • If you are hiring a company to remove weeds with a mechanical harvester, ensure that they have a permit from Parks Canada/TSW and make sure you ask about their process. Also, ensure that they remove the weeds from the water. If they do not, they are operating illegally and creating further problems for you and your neighbours.
  • If you witness a harvester or anyone leaving cut weeds in the water, please note the details of the incident (date, time, location, description of the harvester etc.). Take a picture too, if possible.
  • Send the information to Parks Canada/TSW
  • Parks Canada/TSW is very concerned about illegal mechanical weed harvesting and appreciates any information that may assist them to address illegal operations taking place on our lakes.
