Marriage Licence

Selwyn Township offers the ability to complete your marriage licence application online!

Before getting married in Ontario, you must obtain a marriage licence. A licence cannot be issued after the ceremony has taken place. Marriage licences are valid for ceremonies that occur anywhere in Ontario and are good for three months from the date of issue. Should you not marry within that time period, you must apply and pay for a new licence.

Completing the online application will take 25-30 minutes.

Once your online application is complete, you will need to contact the Township to book an appointment to issue your marriage by calling 705-292-9507 or email info@selwyntownship.ca.

How to Apply for a Marriage Licence

Both parties must jointly complete the online application form. At least one of the parties to the marriage has to attend the licencing appointment at the Municipal Office to obtain the licence. A marriage licence can only be issued to and signed by the prospective applicant(s).

During the online application, the applicant will be requested to upload the required supporting documents, however the applicant will also be required to present the originals during the licencing appointment.

Applicants 16-17 years of age must have special consent from parents/guardians. Persons under 16 years of age cannot be issued a Marriage Licence.

Bring the following to your appointment

Reference number provided from the online application.
The 2 pieces of original and valid government issued ID that each person submitted during the online application.
Original divorce documentation, if applicable.
Payment: The cost of a Marriage Licence is $130.00 (HST does not apply). Payment methods include:
- Cash
- Cheque (please make cheques payable to the Township of Selwyn)
- Debit
- Credit cards are NOT accepted.

Each person applying for the Marriage Licence must provide two pieces of government-issued identification with at least one being photo identification (ID), for each application (four total)

The Township of Selwyn issues the Marriage Licences from the Municipal Office located at 1310 Centre Line, Selwyn.

Re-Marrying After Divorce

Divorced in Canada

You must submit official proof of the divorce when you apply for a Marriage Licence. This can be the original or a court-certified copy of a:

Certificate of Divorce
Final Decree
Final Judgement

A certified copy of either of the above divorce documents may be obtained from the court office that granted the divorce.

Divorced Outside of Canada

If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide certain documents to prove that you are no longer married. The government needs to validate these documents. This process can take up to 4 weeks.

marriage licence application form: completed and signed
statement of sole responsibility: for each divorce (signed by both people who are planning to get married and a witness)
legal opinion letter: from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both people who plan to get married, giving reasons why the divorce or annulment should be recognized in Ontario
divorce decree or annulment: an original or court-certified copy in English or French. If the decree is in another language, you will need to include a translated copy and an affidavit sworn by a certified translator

Note: Completed Foreign Divorce Authorizations are sent to applicants by courier. It is important that your full mailing address including suite/unit/apartment and buzzer number is included on the marriage licence application form, or the courier package cannot be delivered and returned to ServiceOntario.

Obtaining a Marriage Certificate in Ontario

ServiceOntario offers a resource entitled "Before You Get Married", and the ServiceOntario website houses material to ensure accurate information is provided to couples.

It is important to ensure that your marriage is performed properly and legally. You need to check that the person performing your marriage ceremony is an authorized official. A list of Religious Officials Authorized to Solemnize Marriage can be found on the ServiceOntario website, or call ServiceOntario at 1-800-461-2156 for more information.
