The following materials are not collected curbside:

Manufacturer's or industrial waste, any explosive, hazardous or highly combustible material; ashes, construction debris, sawdust and/or shavings; liquid waste, hay, straw and manure, leaves, grass clippings and brush (except for designated areas during the fall and spring collection periods); major appliances, large household furnishings; and tires.

Selwyn Township does not have a large item collection day.
Large items must be dropped off at the Smith Landfill - 1480 County Road 18.

Garbage Collection - Curbside 

Garbage is collected by Waste Connections of Canada, as a private waste collector contracted by the Public Works Department.

General Garbage Information

  • Clear bags must be used for garbage disposal (no opaque bags permitted), with the exception of one opaque privacy bag (grocery bag size) in each large sized clear garbage bag.
  • Exceptions can be made for medical requirements. Contact the Selwyn Township Office at 705-292-9507 to discuss further.
  • Garbage must be out for pick up by 7:00 AM on your collection day, as collection can occur at any time.
  • Each household will be allowed up to two (2) containers and each commercial establishment will be allowed up to four (4) containers.
    • A Container shall mean a galvanized metal or plastic container with a maximum capacity of approximately 17 gallons (77 litres) being larger at the top than at the bottom and having a handle and fitted lid; or a clear transparent polyethylene plastic bag with a maximum size of 30 inches x 37 inches (76 cm x 93 cm) of 1.5 gauge thickness fastened at the top. No container shall weigh more than 30 pounds.
  • Bag Tag is a tag or a sticker issued by the Township for $4.00 per tag and must be affixed to any bags of garbage and non-recyclable rubbish put out for curbside collection that is above and beyond the collection limits noted above.

    • There is a weekly limit of one (1) additional Container with a Bag Tag affixed.

Recycling 

Peterborough County’s recycling program is now managed by Circular Materials – the administrator of the common collection system and a not-for-profit organization that is committed to building an efficient and effective recycling system in Ontario.

Recycling is Easy!

  • Recyclable material must be separated from your garbage.

  • Sort your materials into 2 blue boxes, one for Containers and one for Papers.

    • Use as many boxes as needed, as long as Containers and Papers are in separate boxes.
  • Have your blue boxes curbside by 7:00 AM. 
  • Keep recycling loose in blue boxes.
    • Bagged recycling will not be collected.
  • Recycling is collected on all Private Roads.

Electronics

There is a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) bin located at the Smith Landfill Site.

Acceptable materials include:

Computers including all peripherals and cords, computer tablets, laptops, all types of phones (corded, cordless, mobile, smart), answering machines, pagers, radios, speakers, turntables, TVs, VCRs, DVD players and Blu-ray players (no VCR tapes, CDs, DVDs); cameras (digital, manual and video), gaming devices and accessories (no game cartridges).

Note: Gasoline powered or freon items are not permitted in the bin.

Remember to wipe any drives, etc. prior to dropping off your materials.

Mattresses & Box Springs

Mattresses and box springs are banned from the Smith Landfill Site.

Please take them to the Bensfort Road Landfill Site - 1260 Bensfort Road, Peterborough. There is a fee.

Household Batteries

Household batteries can be dropped off at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office, Selwyn Public Library branches and the Smith Landfill Site.

Organics Collection

Peterborough County administers a curbside green bin program available to residents of Bridgenorth (see map). For more information, visit the Peterborough County website.

  • Green bins are available for pick up at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office, located at 1310 Centre Line, Selwyn.
  • Absolutely no plastic, including biodegradable or compostable bags, can go in the green bins.
Composting

Composters, digesters and kitchen catchers are available for purchase at the Selwyn Township Municipal Office and at the Peterborough County Infrastructure Services Department Office - 310 Armour Road, Peterborough.

  • Digesters: $60.00
  • Composters: $30.00
  • Kitchen Catchers: $5.00

Leaf & Yard Waste Collection

Leaf & Yard Waste Curbside Collection is administered by Peterborough County. For collection dates, route maps and more detailed information, visit the Peterborough County website.

Week A: Arnott & Gifford Drives, Bridgenorth, Emerald Isle, Ennismore (Settlement), Terraview Heights, Woodland Acres and Youngstown

Outside of the Collection Area?

For residents outside of the collection area, leaf and yard waste can be dropped off at the Smith Landfill Site free-of-charge during the Curbside Collection time frame only. *Note: Brush will NOT be accepted free-of-charge.

Looking for other ways to divert your Leaf & Yard Waste?

  • Mulch the leaves on your lawn to reintroduce nutrients into the soil, use the leaves for layering a backyard compost or for creating a no-dig garden bed. For more information, visit the GreenUP website.
  • Create your own Hugelkultur, a no-dig raised bed, made out of decaying wood debris.
  • Chip your tree trimmings and use for mulch, landscaping, or compost; or up-cycle for crafts.
  • Avoid trimming all together and preserve the shade that tree canopies provide.

Household Hazardous Waste

Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste (also called MHSW) does not belong in the garbage or blue box recycling, as it contains toxins that are harmful to human and environmental health.

Household Hazardous Waste Depot (HHWD) at the Smith Landfill Site is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from May 30, 2023 to September 2, 2023.
